Denise Dy Topples Cardinal Pair To Reach Regional Final
Oct. 25, 2009
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Husky sophomore Denise Dy continued a sensational run in both singles and doubles today, advancing into the singles final and doubles semifinal along with her partner Joyce Ardies. Dy will play fourth-ranked Cal standout Jana Juricova in the singles final on Monday.
Dy had a marathon day at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center today, but it was perhaps the best day of her young career. In the quarterfinals, Dy upset fifth-ranked Stanford star Hilary Barte, the 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Barte took the first set on her home courts, 6-4, but Dy picked up her game and powered to the upset with 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the second and third sets.
In the semifinals later in the day, Dy was pushed to the limit by another Cardinal, red-hot freshman Mallory Burdette who had upset two Top-25 players in her last two matches. Dy claimed the first set, 7-5, but struggled in the second set, falling 1-6. Neither player would give in the third set as it headed into a tiebreaker, but there Dy stepped up to dominate the breaker, 7-1.
'Denise is playing the best tennis of her life,' said head coach Jill Hultquist. '[Both matches] were very high caliber and intense fights.'
All of this was on the heels of Dy and Ardies' early doubles match, where again they faced some Cardinal red across the net. The third-seeded Huskies ousted Carolyn McVeigh and Veronica Li, 8-3 and will play in the semis tomorrow at 10 a.m. prior to the singles final.
Junior Venise Chan had an off day in her singles quarterfinal, falling to 56th-ranked Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State. Chan had won her two previous meetings against Zheltova, but couldn't find her rhythm today, falling 6-4, 6-2.
