Doubles Teams Reach Quarters In Regional Play
Oct. 25, 2009
BERKELEY, Calif. - Two Husky doubles tandems are among the final eight still vying for the Northwest Regional title at Cal's Hellman Tennis Center.
The Dawgs had three teams in the round of 16, and two came through with wins against pairs from Pac-10 power Stanford. Juniors Tobi Obenaus and Alex Rosinksi posted an extremely impressive win over five-seeds Alex Clayton and Richard Wire, topping the singles All-American and former Pac-10 doubles champion, 8-5. Junior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and freshman Kyle McMorrow also posted an 8-5 victory over Stanford's Lin and Kehrer.
In the main singles draw, McMorrow had his strong first tourney run ended in the round of 16 by Cal's Chris Konigsfeldt. McMorrow battled back after a tough first set tiebreak loss, but eventually fell 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-0. Senior Derek Drabble also had his win streak snapped by 5th-seeded Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State, 6-3, 6-4.
Three more Huskies continued to thrive in the consolation draw. Obenaus, Rosinski, and sophomore Matt Stith all won their round of 16 matches in straight sets. Obenaus and Rosinski, partners on the doubles court, had to play each other in the next round, with Obenaus prevailing 6-2, 6-3. Stith also moved on to the semis with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ola Bakke of San Francisco.
The doubles quarterfinals and semifinals plus the consolation semis and final will all take place Monday.
