Golden Bears Secure Spot in Wilson/ITA Regional Singles Final

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team completed the third day of play at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship by securing a spot in the singles championship match and with two teams advancing to the doubles quarterfinal on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Hellman Tennis Complex. Golden Bear juniors Pedro Zerbini and Bozhidar Katsatov will face each other in one singles semifinal for the right to represent Cal in the championship match.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 15 Bradley Klahn and No. 76 Richard Wire of Stanford will square off to set up a Bears vs. Cardinal singles final for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. The regional champion will earn an automatic berth into the 2009 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships in New Haven, Conn. Nov. 5-8.
No. 42-ranked Zerbini made good on his fourth seed as he defeated No. 96 Ryan Thacher of Stanford, 6-4, 7-6, with a 9-7 tiebreaker score in the round of 16. Zerbini then took out No. 91-ranked Gregory Hirshman of Stanford, 6-1, 7-6, with another 9-7 tiebreaker score in the singles quarterfinal. Katsarov defeated No. 102 Anton Stryhas of Sacramento State in three sets after coming back from a 6-4 loss in the first set. Katsarov forced a tiebreaker in the second set and won, 7-3, before running away with a 6-2 victory in the final set. Freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt continued his impressive run to the singles quarterfinal as he edged out Washington's Kyle Morrow, 7-6, in the first set; with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker. After dropping the second set, 6-2, Konigsfeldt came back to win, 6-0, in the third.
Katsarov and Konigsfeldt met in the quarterfinal round with the elder claiming the first set, 6-1. Konigsfeldt fired back to win the second set by the same score before Katsarov took control with a 6-3 win in the third set to advance to the semifinal for a match against Zerbini. Sophomore Nick Andrews was eliminated by Klahn of Stanford in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-0.
In singles consolation matches, sophomore Sky Lovill maintained his momentum to earn a spot in the semifinal with four straight set victories. In the round of 16, he defeated Doug Mayeda of Oregon, 6-3, 6-3; then he took out Einar Hart of San Francisco, 7-5, 6-4.
The Bears put two doubles teams into the quarterfinal with Andrews and Konigsfeldt defeating third-seeded Holden Ching and Marko Starcevic of Sacramento State, 8-5; and Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan getting a 9-8 win over Derek Drabble and Nick Tchernikov of Washington. The duo earned a 7-3 win in the decisive tiebreaker. Cal's three other doubles teams were eliminated in the round of 16. The fourth-seeded team of junior Jonathan Dahan and Zerbini was edged by Evan Schleining and Filip Zivkovic of Portland, 9-8. The Pilot duo won the tiebreaker by a 7-5 count. Senior Bijan Hejazi and sophomore Tommie Murphy fell to the second-seeded team of Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Stryhas of Sacramento State, 8-5. Junior Zach Gilbert and Lovill also fell by an 8-5 score, to Taylor Leiby and Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State.
