The California Women's basketball team held its annual Media Day on Monday, Oct. 26. Coach Boyle along with senior guards Lauren Greif, Natasha Vital, and Alexis Gray-Lawson answered questions about the upcoming season.
'We are really looking forward to a great season,' head Coach Joanne Boyle said in her opening remarks. 'This year will be a little different. We lived a lot of veterans but we've also gained a lot of depth and young people in the program. So we have a balance of really experienced and mature upper classmen and adding that group of youth and depth will make for a very interesting season.'
The team will be lead by the three senior returning guards, Alexis Gray-Lawson, Laruen Greif, and Natasha Vital. Gray-Lawson, a first team All-Pac-10 selection last year is the leading scorer among the returners, averaging 12.2 points per game last season.
'I am really excited and do what I have to do to win,' said Alexis Gray-Lawson, who is coming back for her fifth and final season with Cal.'Whatever that takes and that's what I'm doing. I will try to rebound a little bit more.'
The most common questions dealt with the new look to the Cal roster. With six freshman among the 11 players on the team, everyone wanted to know how things were starting to shape up among the newcomers.
'I think right now there's still a lot of trying it out and see how it's going to go,' said Lauren Greif. 'During practice there are a lot of attempts and figure out what we have. It will shape up for everybody once we figure out what we can do and what we can't do.'
Boyle is still trying to sort things out and has no strong guesses yet as to what her opening day lineup will look like, other than it will feature her three senior leaders, including co-team captain Natasha Vital.
Vital, a soft spoken individual, lets her play speak for her in terms of leadership.
'I feel like if I'm being a good leader,' said Vital. 'I have to make sure I'm doing all the things that I need to do. I like to lead by example first.'
The event was held just eight days before the team's exhibition game against Vanguard, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Game time for the exhibition has been changed to 6 p.m. All tickets are free for that game.
Single game tickets also went on sale on Monday, Oct. 26. Tickets are now available through the athletic ticket office for all 2009-10 home games, including the Nov. 22 matchup against Baylor and the Colliers International Classic tournament featuring 2009 Sweet-16 team Texas A&M as well as the March 6 Battle of the Bay against Stanford.
