Dy Claims ITA Regional Singles Crown
Oct. 26, 2009
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington sophomore Denise Dy completed her historic run to capture the singles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. Dy upset top-seeded California All-American Jana Juricova, 6-3, 6-3, to raise the trophy.
The San Jose, Calif. native is the first Husky woman ever to win the Regional crown and qualifies now for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Connecticut. She will join Husky teammate Venise Chan at nationals, marking the first time UW has ever qualified two women for the 32-player field.
'I am very, very happy right now. This is a really big tournament but hopefully I can continue on at this level in bigger tournaments to come,' said Dy, who was happy to be joining Chan at National Indoors next month. 'Venise told me she wanted someone to go with her and that she plays better when she has people there so I guess I used that as motivation. We'll have fun together.'
Dy, ranked 58th entering the fall and seeded ninth in the tourney, proved she can compete with the very best the Pac-10 has to offer this weekend, as the Northwest Region includes all the top players from NCAA runner-up California, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington State in addition to UW; five of the nine conference teams. The Northwest Regional was one of 12 Regional tournaments across the country held over the past week.
In today's final, Dy faced Cal's top singles player Juricova, the nation's fourth-ranked singles player and last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Juricova had not dropped a set in the whole tournament and only one of her 10 set wins had gone past 6-2. Dy, however, dispatched the top-seed in straight sets.
In the quarterfinals on Sunday, Dy also defeated the second-seed, 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year Hilary Barte of Stanford. Barte is ranked fifth in the nation by the ITA. She also beat 55th-ranked Alexandra Poorta of St. Mary's in the round of 16. With her doubles duties and two three-set singles matches, Dy spent an incredible six and a half hours on the court on Sunday just to get to Monday's final. She said her stamina was her biggest weapon this weekend.
'We're basically playing three matches every day with singles and doubles, so for me being fit was the most important thing,' said Dy.
Unfortunately Dy's run in doubles ended one match too soon in the semifinals this morning prior to her singles match. Dy and partner Joyce Ardies fell to the second-seeded Stanford duo of Barte and Burdette, 8-1. Ardies and Dy will hold out hope of an at-large selection to the National Indoor tournament in doubles.
Dy and Chan will head to Yale for the National Indoors from Nov. 5-8. That same weekend, the rest of the Huskies will be in San Diego for the SDSU Fall Classic.
