'Dribble For The Cure II' To Take Place This Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009
Oct. 27, 2009
LOS ANGELES - 'Dribble For The Cure II' will take place Sunday, Nov. 1 at historic Pauley Pavilion. Once again Ben Howland's UCLA men's basketball team and the Bruin Athletic Department have joined forces with UCLA basketball alumnus John Vallely, the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA for the second annual fund-raising event.
Proceeds will be directed to finding a cure for pediatric cancer and supporting the treatment for children with cancer at the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. At last year's inaugural 'Dribble For The Cure', more than 500 participants dribbled a basketball across the Bruin campus, raising $75,000 to help find the cure for pediatric cancer.
The event will start and end at Pauley Pavilion, where activities, autographs, booths and entertainment will be featured. Participants will have the opportunity to meet the UCLA men's basketball squad, along with student-athletes from other Bruin athletic teams. Each participant is asked to bring their own basketball and 'Dribble For The Cure' on a course through the UCLA campus.
Team (a minimum of 10) and individual participants will be asked to collect pledges for their 'Dribble' and will become eligible for prizes based on pledge amounts turned in the day of the event. Each participant will also receive an official 'Dribble For The Cure' t-shirt.
For many years, Vallely and his family have been on the front line in the battle against cancer. A starting guard on John Wooden's UCLA 1969 and 1970 NCAA Championship teams, Vallely is a cancer survivor and the Director of Scientific Affairs for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. In 1991, John and Karen Vallely lost their daughter Erin to cancer at the age of 12.
'Joining forces with John and his family, the PCRF and the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA makes this a very memorable event for our team, our athletic department and for the Bruin community,' said Howland. 'This event will be a meaningful day and any success we achieve is due to the efforts of many. This year our goal is to involve more participants and raise even more money to truly make a difference in the lives of children suffering from cancer.'
