Dana Vollmer Named to 2009 Duel in the Pool U.S. Team

BERKELEY - Former California star Dana Vollmer was named to the U.S. team that will compete at the 2009 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool Dec. 18-19 in Manchester, England, USA Swimming announced on Wednesday.
The bi-annual Duel in the Pool is a made-for-TV event, designed to showcase the sport's most exciting swimmers. This year's Duel takes on a new format with Team USA facing a team comprised of the top swimmers from Great Britain, Germany and Italy. The event, a short-course meters meet, will be held at the Manchester Aquatic Center.
Swimmers will be awarded for world-records and wins with world records commanding up to a $15,000 bonus and gold medals commanding $1,000.
Vollmer, the 2009 NCAA and Pac-10 Conference Swimmer of the Year, won four NCAA titles (100- and 200-yard freestyles and 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays) en route to the Golden Bears' NCAA team championship last season. The 2009 Honda Sports Award winner for swimming also won the NCAA title in the 2007 100-yard butterfly as well as a 2004 Olympic gold medal as part of the U.S. team's record-setting 800-meter free relay .
The U.S. team for the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool is comprised of the fastest swimmers selected from four meets in 2009 - the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, Word University Games, U.S. Open and FINA World Championships. The European Select Team will be comprised of up to 18 men and 18 women from Great Britain, Germany and Italy, with each country sending a team of six men and six women.
This is the fourth Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in the history of USA Swimming. Past Duels were held in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and pit all-star teams from the U.S. and Australia against each other. Cal, the defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion, returns to action when it hosts Fresno State for a dual meet on Nov. 5 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
