Recapping Last Weekend:
Against No. 6 Stanford: The Sun Devils hung tough against the powerful Cardinals, coming off of back-to-back NCAA Finals appearances in 2007 and 2008. ASU pushed the Cardinal to the brink in the first set hoping to put their foot in the door as they forced 20 tie scores and 11 lead changes in the set, but Stanford was juuuuuust able to squeak out the first set with a narrow 33-31 win in extra points.
Stanford seemed to take the reigns more in the second set though A State didn’t go without a fight, hitting .215 for a match-high for ASU, but the effort wasn’t enough as ASU fell 25-21. ASU just couldn’t pull it back together in the third set as well as 11 errors spelled the story for ASU with a 25-20 loss to finish the sweep for Stanford.
Against No. 15 Cal: The Sun Devils came out strong again in the first set as they hit .321 with Sarah Reaves and Sofie Schlagintweit leading the way, but the effort fell just short with Cal running hot on offense with a 25-18 win. The second set saw Cal push the throttle a bit higher as they hit .394 as well as posting five blocks for a 25-17 win. ASU wasn’t able to hold it together in the third either as the offense seemed to be off rhythm with 10 unforced errors as Cal ripped through a .341 attack percentage to finish the match with a 25-13 win.
Scouting This Weekend’s Competition/Series History:
No. 21 Washington State: The Sun Devils will face-off against the Cougars for the 49th time in overall program history where ASU holds the series lead 26-22, with the Cougars holding a 1-0 lead this season after ASU fell in a tough five sets in Pullman earlier this season. In Pac-10 history, ASU leads the series 25-21 with a 14-9 series lead in matches set in Tempe.
No. 5 Washington: The Sun Devils will face the powerful Huskies for the 52nd time in program history with the Huskies holding an all-time record of 18-33. In Pac-10 play, the Huskies hold a 29-17 record over ASU, while leading the Sun Devils at home with a 14-9 record.
