Oct. 30, 2009
The Arizona State women's swimming and diving team started the season off with a road win over Utah. The women's team crushed the Utes 194-102 while the men's team fell 187-113.
Several Sun Devils earned wins in their ASU debut. Ashley Daly, a transfer from Washington, took swam away with a win in the 1000 freestyle, beating out freshman Shannon Langrebe by over a second. Paige Schultz, who came in as one of the program's most highly touted recruits, began her Sun Devil career with a win in the 200 free after clocking in at 1:52.04. Finishing in 52.28, Katie Haron took first in the 100 free. Cassie Morrice was another Sun Devil earning a win in her debut as she clocked in a time of 5:09.28 to win the 500 free. Daly placed second in the event. Brittany Jumer scored 288.60 points on the 3-meter to place first.
Senior Jamie Martinez out-touched teammate Lizzy Luttrell at the wall in the 100 back, and again in the 200 back to take first in both events. The Sun Devils swept the 100 breast with Rebecca Edjervik, Jordyn Green and Sara McDaniel finishing 1-2-3. Green went on to win the 200 breast in 2:20.88. In the 200 fly, sophomore Shoshanna Rutemiller out-touched Caroline Kuczynski as Rutemiller finished in 2:09.94. Ashley Evans also earned a win in her first meet of her senior season as she took first in the 200 IM with Schultz taking second. The Sun Devil relay teams also won both the 200 free and 200 medley relays
The men's team had two double winners in Riley McCormick and Xavier Mohammed. Despite being more of a platform specialist, the 2008 Canadian Olympian looked impressive in his Sun Devil debut as he scored 323.85 to win the 1-meter and 342.00 to take the 3-meter. Cameron Bradshaw finished second in both. Expected to be solid in nearly every event for the Sun Devils, Mohammed earned his first win of his Sun Devil career as he won the 1000 free by over 10 seconds. Mohammed later won the 200 fly, clocking in at 1:53.76.
The Sun Devils compete against BYU tomorrow morning.
