Cal Moves Up To No. 20 In BCS Standings
Nov. 1, 2009
BERKELEY - Cal moved up four spots to No. 20 in the most recent BCS Standings released on Sunday. The Bears are also returned to both the AP Top 25 rankings and the USA Today poll at No. 23 after being among teams receiving votes in each last week. The Bears had not been ranked in either poll since falling out of both on Oct. 4 following back-to-back losses at Oregon and vs. USC. Cal has won three straight Pac-10 games since those two defeats.
Cal had been ranked as high as No. 6 by both AP and USA Today on Sept. 20 after opening the season with a 3-0 mark following a No. 12 preseason ranking in both.
The top five Bowl Championship Series teams in Sunday's standings are Florida (.9918 BCS average), Texas (.9227), Alabama (.9166), Iowa (.8407) and Cincinnati (.8033). No. 8 Oregon (.7651) is the first of four Pac-10 teams listed, followed by No. 12 USC (.5336), No. 18 Arizona (.2589) and Cal (.2095).
The Harris Interactive and USA Today polls, as well as computer rankings each comprise one-third of the BCS Standings. Cal is ranked No. 15 by the computers, No. 22 in the Harris Interactive poll and No. 23 in the USA Today poll.
Florida, Texas and Alabama are also the top three teams in the AP Top 25 rankings and USA Today polls.
Cal (6-2, 3-2 Pac-10) will play its final two home games of the 2009 season at Memorial Stadium the next two Saturdays. The Bears face Oregon State (5-3, 3-2 Pac-10) in a nationally-televised Fox Sports Net game this Saturday, Nov. 7 (4:00 p.m. PT). The contest will be broadcast locally on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
The starting time and television broadcast information for the team's final home game of the 2009 campaign against Arizona (Saturday, Nov. 14) is expected to be announced on Monday, Nov. 2.
