Men's Soccer Blanks California, 1-0
Nov. 1, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer shutout California 1-0 in a defensive masterpiece Sunday afternoon on senior day at Paul Lorenz Field.
'We had a great win,' Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. 'I am so happy for our seniors and happy for our team. One of the things I wanted to get across to our players was that they can control a lot of things in their destiny.
The story of the day was the defense of Oregon State (7-6-2 overall, 3-4-0 Pac-10 Conference) who held California scoreless for 90 minutes.
Oregon State sophomore Colin Mitchell scored the game's lone goal with 12:18 gone in the first half on an assist from Danny Mwanga. Mitchell's goal was his fifth of the season and it was Mwanga's first assist.
California's Andrew Wiederman came into the game as the Pac-10's leading scorer with 11 goals on the season but was limited to only three shots.
The shutout was the fourth of the season by sophomore keeper Steve Spangler. He also had one save in the game, 41 on the season.
California (8-8-1, 2-6-1) took the first meeting 4-1 on thanks to a hat trick by Jeff Cosgriff who was held to just one shot Sunday.
'Were going to enjoy this one and then put it by us,' Simmons said. 'We need to believe in ourselves when we go down to Southern California.'
The Beavers head back out on the road when they take on UCLA Friday Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and San Diego State Sunday Nov. 8 with a 12 p.m. start.
