Cal Wins a Trio of Races at Newport Regatta

NEWPORT BEACH - The California men's crew team swept Stanford as it claimed first in the Open 8, Open 4 and the Freshman 8 at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday in Newport Beach, Calif. The Golden Bears clocked a time of 13:40.057 in the 8, 15:47.231 in the 4 and 14:59.643 in the Freshman 8 to take top honors in all three races.
In the eight, Cal placed first and third in the race. Rowing on Cal's winning boat were Jack Farthing, Nareg Guregian, James Long-Lerno, Patrick Williams, Spencer Crowley, Will Dean, Nick Lucey, Sam Walker and the Cox Zach Vlahos. Stanford took second with a time of 13:55.555, while the second boat for the Bears took third at 14:03.208. Cal also had a boat finish in fifth and seventh.
In the four, the Bears came in first and second, ahead of a trio of Cardinal boats that finished in third to fifth. Competing on Cal's first-place boat were Long-Lerno, Dean, Crowley, Guregian and the Cox Vlahos. The second-place Cal boat clocked a time of 15:49.362.
In the Freshman 8, Cal once again took the top two spots. Rowing on Cal's top boat were Thomas Ehlers, Brad Lewis, Michael Shenk, Michael McDevitt, Bridges King, Zach Felise, Christoph Caron Marquis, Matt Schiller and the Cox Jiean Li. The second-place Cal boat crossed the finish line at 15:00.853.
