Jayne Appel Named Associated Press Preseason All-American
Nov. 3, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford center Jayne Appel received another preseason honor Tuesday as she was named to the Associated Press 2009-10 preseason All-America team. Appel, a senior from Pleasant Hill, Calif., received 34 votes from the 40-member national media panel.
Behind the play of Appel, who averaged 16.1 points and 9.2 rebounds a game in addition to shooting 60.2 percent from the field, Stanford advanced to its second consecutive Final Four in 2008-09. The Cardinal will open the 2009-10 campaign next Friday, Nov. 13, at Old Dominion at 4 p.m. PT.
Appel's performance last season garnered her a slew of honors, including her first career State Farm Coaches' All-America selection and the Pac-10 Player of the Year award. She was also named to the All-America second team of both the Associated Press and espn.com.
Already in 2009-10, Appel has been named as a preseason candidate for both the Wade Trophy Player of the Year award and the John R. Wooden Award. Appel was also honored in September as one of Glamour's Top 10 College Women.
Appel was the second-leading vote-getter amongst the five players selected to the AP's preseason All-America team. Connecticut's Maya Moore was a unanimous selection, while teammate Tina Charles (28 votes), Ohio State's Jantel Lavender (20) and Virginia's Monica Wright (20) made up the rest of the team.
Stanford sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike was among 14 players who also received votes from the panel.
