Lisa Kevorkian Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Nov. 3, 2009
BERKELEY - For her instrumental role in Cal's two Pac-10 Conference victories last weekend, redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian was heralded as the Nov. 3 Pac-10 Player of the Week. Kevorkian scored the gamewinner in a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against Arizona State and contributed a goal in the 2-0 win over Arizona.
Kevorkian was also named Muscle Milk California student-athlete of the week as well as a primetime performer of the week according to College Soccer 360.
'Lisa's performances this past weekend were fantastic,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. 'She led the team with her exceptional effort on Sunday. Her winning goal was an amazing finish.'
On Oct. 30, Kevorkian had the assist on the game-winning goal in the third minute against Arizona. While on a counter attack, Kevorkian passed the ball to Amanda Groves, who shot it to the back right corner to give Cal a 1-0 lead, which it never surrendered. Kevorkian teamed up with junior forward Alex Morgan to distance the Bears, 2-0, with just under 37 minutes remaining in regulation. Escaping defenders, Morgan dribbled the ball past diving UA keeper Devon Wharf in the box, and passed to Kevorkian, who was on the near side just above the end line. Kevorkian shot the ball in for her sixth goal of the season.
After being honored prior to kickoff as one of the squad's seniors on Nov. 1, Kevorkian scored the game-winning goal at 97:36 to propel her Bears to a 3-2 victory over Arizona State. After taking five shots through the first 97 minutes of play, Kevorkian put one through at 97:36 for her team-leading fourth gamewinner of the 2009 season. Katie Suits crossed the ball to Kevorkian, who headed it in for a score and the win.
She finished the weekend with nine shots, two goals - one of which was the gamewinner - one assist, on Groves' game-winning goal, and five points.
Kevorkian has now netted a goal in each of Cal's past three games. She paces the Bears with four game-winning goals and is second on the team with seven goals and three assists. With her seven goals and four gamewinners, she has broken her previous personal season-high of six goals and three game-winning goals, both of which she had set in 2008.
This is the first Pac-10 player of the week award of Kevorkian's career.
