Pac-10 Recap With Christine Babcock
Nov. 4, 2009
Sophomore All-American Christine Babcock placed fifth at the Pac-10 Championships last Friday in Long Beach, California. Babcock was the top Pac-10 finisher at NCAAs one year ago, and the Irvine, Calif. native talks about the team defending its title but still looking to peak at Nationals on November 23.
'Pac-10s was another successful step on our road to Nationals. Our arrival in Long Beach was met with goody baskets at the front desk and that jump-started the great weekend. On Thursday we previewed the course, with our trainer, John Jackson, racing to his 6k PR. The course was nice and flat and we were geared up and ready to go. We had an amazing italian dinner and got frozen yogurt to top off a great pre-race meal!
On Friday we started our morning with a shake-out, like we do before every race. Then we proceeded to get tattooed and braided up (by Coach Kelly) for the race. Before arriving at the course, we received an inspirational message from an article entitled Carpe Diem, inspired to go out and run for more than ourselves. Our excitement reached its peak as we toed the line, ready to attempt to defend our Pac-10 title. The race unfolded as expected-it was a battle between the Ducks and the Huskies.
Ultimately, we achieved our goal, defending our Pac-10 title. While the race was not perfect, we were able to walk away from the course with a greater understanding of what we need to improve on. We value the opportunity that we had to defend our Pac-10 title, but we know that this was not the ultimate goal, with our main focus on Nationals. With that said, we will continue on in our pursuit of being the best that we can be at Nationals. Go Huskies!'
