Five Pac-10 Teams in Baseball America's Top 25 Recruiting Classes

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Five Pac-10 teams have recruiting classes for 2010 ranked in the top 25 according to Baseball America, including two rated in the top five. STANFORD’s class was rated No. 2, followed by ARIZONA STATE at No. 3. UCLA has the No. 19 rated class, and OREGON STATE came in at No. 22 and OREGON at No. 24.
The Cardinal has 13 newcomers for the 2010 season with a good balance of position players and pitchers. INF Kenny Diekroeger (Woodside, Calif.) and OF Jake Stewart (Fort Collins, Colo.) will join RHP Mark Appel (San Roman, Calif.), RHP Chris Jenkins (New Jersey) and LHP Garrett Hughes (Sioux City, Iowa) on The Farm this season. Diekroeger was the highest-drafted player in the 2009 MLB Draft that opted to attend a four-year college.
The 2009 defending Pac-10 Champions Sun Devils welcome 20 newcomers, including 14 freshmen, to a team that advanced to the programs’s 21st College World Series last season. Highlighting the 2010 class are RHP/DH Jake Barrett (Mesa, Ariz.), SS Deven Marrero (Davie, Fla.) and OF Andrew Aplin (Suisun, Calif.).
The Bruins add 13 players to their roster, four of which were selected in the 2009 MLB draft. They include OF Cody Keefer (Davis, Calif.), RHP Scott Griggs (Alamo, Calif.), OF Jeff Gelalich (La Verne, Calif.) and OF Beau Amaral (Huntington Beach, Calif.). This marks the Bruins’ fifth-consecutive recruiting class rated in the top 20 by Baseball America.
The Beavers bring in 20 newcomers, including 12 freshmen, anchored by C Andrew Susac (Roseville, Calif.), who was a 16th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 MLB Draft. Other notable players include LHP/1B Matt Boyd (Mercer Island, Wash.), INFs Danny Hayes (Roseville, Calif.), Tyler Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Andy Quiring (Chico, Calif.) C Parker Berberet (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and LHP/UTL Dylan Jones (Aloha, Ore.).
The Ducks tout their second-straight top 25 recruiting class, adding 17 athletes from the high school ranks, as well as top junior college players. The freshman class boasts LHP Christian Jones (Danville, Calif.) and OF Andrew Mendenhall (Kennewick, Wash.), while the junior college players include INF Stephen Kaupang (La Mirada, Calif.) and OF Marcus Piazzisi (Placentia, Calif.).
The 2010 campaign gets under way on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 when Stanford plays host to Rice, UCLA takes on Southern in the MLB Urban Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., and Arizona State battles Northern Illinois. Oregon State will be in action the following weekend when it plays Tennessee.
