Nov. 5, 2009
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Trojan tennis had a strong first day out of the gates at the competitive 2009 ITA Division 1 Men's & Women's National Indoor Championship, with all three USC athletes grabbing first-round wins in singles play today in New Haven, Conn. While Maria Sanchez, Robert Farah and Steve Johnson all picked up singles wins, Farah and Johnson also teamed up for a doubles victory to push into another full day tomorrow.
Maria Sanchez opened up the trip by extending her winning streak out to seven as the ITA Southwest Regional champion took down Miami's Laura Vallverdu in a solid 6-2, 6-3 decision. That will put the USC junior up against Fresno State's Anastasia Petukhova tomorrow in the singles Round of 16. Petukhova served up an upset of top-seeded Maria Mosolova today in the Round of 32.
On the men's side of things, senior Robert Farah and sophomore Steve Johnson made it a winning effort across the board. In singles action, Johnson pulled out a three-setter over Damian Hume with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 comeback win to advance to a noon round of 16 match tomorrow against Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins. Meanwhile, teammate Robert Farah took down Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek 6-3, 6-4 to also push into tomorrow's Round of 16. Farah will face Georgia Tech's Guillermo Gomez at noon tomorrow.
Side-by-side for another busy day, Farah and Johnson teamed up to great success once again in doubles. Farah/Johnson went up against the tournament's No. 4 seeded Michalicka/Baumann of Wisconsin and pinned up a powerful 8-3 win to punch the Trojans' ticket to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
