No. 12 Beavers set for fall finale
Nov. 6, 2009
CORVALLIS - The No. 12 Oregon State men's golf team is preparing to play its final event of the fall season at the Saint Mary's College Invitational early next week.
The field for this year's event includes two teams currently ranked in the nation's Top 50 by Golfstat, with the Beavers' No. 12 ranking the highest in the field. No. 33 Fresno State and No. 51 San Diego are also in the field along with Cal Poly, Denver, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Memphis, Nevada, Portland, Saint Mary's College, San Francisco, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Wisconsin.
'The guys are well prepared for this event and have a good idea of what the course will be like,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'We're looking to go out there and finish the fall season on a positive note and with how everybody's been playing I expect us to have a good showing.'
The tournament will be played at Poppy Hills Golf Course, a 6,857-yard, par-72 course at Pebble Beach, Calif., Nov. 9-10. It is a 54-hole tournament consisting of three 18-hole round, with 36 continuous holes played on Monday followed by a final round on Tuesday.
'The course is short with a lot of irons, 3-woods and hybrids off the tees,' Watts said. 'The ability to hit the ball a long distance isn't a huge advantage at Poppy Hills.'
The Beavers have not competed since Oct. 16-18 when they tied for first at the prestigious Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by East Tennessee State. OSU is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation according to Golfstat, and is No. 14 in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
