Rain Suspends Play at Saint Mary's Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - The California men's tennis team put two doubles teams into the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex Friday, Nov. 6. The Golden Bears also put two players into the singles round of 16 of the Red Flight before rain forced the suspension of play. Eighth-seeded sophomore Nick Andrews defeated William Schumacher of San Francisco, 6-4, 6-3; and sophomore Tommie Murphy advanced with a 7-6, 6-3 win against Michael Carreno of Saint Mary's.
In doubles matches, freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt paired up with junior Pedro Zerbini to hold the second seed in the red doubles flight. The two took an 8-2 win against Jordan Bridge and Rob Foy of Cal Poly to advance to the quarterfinal. Andrews and sophomore Sky Lovill took out Sebastian Bell and Brian McPhee of Cal Poly, 8-3, to advance as well.
Senior Bijan Hejazi and Murphy had trouble with Quassim Derbel and Kristian Kuharszky of Nevada, and fell, 8-3, while the top-seeded duo of junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan fell in an 8-4 upset to Steven Dawson and Gavin Leon of Saint Mary's.
