Washington Crews Prepared For Head Of The Lake Regatta
Nov. 6, 2009
SEATTLE - The Washington crew program will cap the fall season with the in the 28th Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 8.
This year's edition of the regatta will feature a mix of collegiate, Canadian collegiate and club teams, who will race along the class 3.1 mile course from Lake Union and through the Montlake Cut. Some of the crews who will make the trip to Seattle are Gonzaga, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria and Washington State, to name a few. All in all, there will be 32 events at the Head of the Lake, which is co-hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club and the Huskies crew program.
This fall has seen the Huskies not only showcase their talent at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, but also on their home course during practice, which recently saw a 17-year record fall for Washington's coxed-pair time trial.
The Head of the Lake regatta is important because it provides racing experience for those rowers who didn't qualify during team selection for the Varsity 8 that went to Boston. The long mornings of the fall practice season have the rowers tired of racing against one another as well, ready for different competition.
'This is their day in the sun,' said rowing director and women's coach Bob Ernst. 'It's exciting for all of them, to get a chance to row. They want to get out there and race.'
Like the competition for Head of the Charles, Ernst selected his crews using a head race trial. The top four finishers made the varsity 8. The men's team will split up their top rowers to add more intra-squad competition to the race.
Washington is entered in several categories, and will split their boats accordingly. The men's crews will start first with the collegiate open eight race, followed by the women's collegiate eight. The end of the collegiate racing category will come with the open four races, where both men's and women's teams will have a handful of boats entered.
