Juricova Advances to Singles Championship Match at ITA Indoors
Nov. 7, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - No. 4-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova advanced to the singles championship match of the 2009 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University, Saturday, Nov. 7. The Slovak Republic native became just the second Golden Bear to earn a spot in the singles title match at the Indoor Championships by defeating No. 58-ranked Denise Dy of Washington, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinal. All-American Susie Babos advanced to the singles championship match as a freshman in 2004, but fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Megan Bradley of Miami.
Fourth-seeded Juricova avenged an earlier loss to seventh-seeded Dy and extended her streak of set victories to eight. Dy put up a fight in the first set as she broke Juricova's serve to go up, 4-3. Juricova retaliated to break back and earn a four-all tie as she put pressure on the Husky serve by stepping in on Dy's second serve attempts. The aggressive play paid off for Juricova as she held serve to go up with a 5-4 lead. Dy didn't have enough to fend off Juricova in the 10th game as she had her serve broken to go down one set to none.
Juricova and Dy stayed toe-to-toe in games in the early going of the second set but Juricova earned a 4-0 lead before Dy broke to get a game at 4-1. Juricova broke back to go up 5-1 before she held once more to finish off her Husky opponent for the right to advance to the singles final.
Juricova will face second-seeded No. 8 Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech in the championship match set for 1 p.m. ET, Sunday, Nov. 8. Juricova faced Falconi twice as a freshman and won each meeting. She first took out Falconi at the ITA Team Indoor Championships in a 6-3, 7-5 win on Feb. 14 before defeating Falconi, 6-0, 6-4, in the NCAA team championship round of 16 on May 15.
The No. 2-ranked doubles team of junior Mari Andersson and Juricova carried the top seed in the doubles consolation draw and earned their second victory with a 9-7 win against Pavi Francis and Marta Lesniak of Southern Methodist in the bracket's semifinal. Andersson and Juricova will take on the No. 9-ranked team of Kristi Boxx and Karen Njissen of Mississippi in the doubles consolation final on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. ET.
