Nov. 7, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior forward Seth Tarver led all scorers with 17 points as the Oregon State defense held Western Oregon to less than 30 percent from the field as the Beavers cruised to a 75-55 win over the Wolves in a men's basketball exhibition contest on Saturday.
Oregon State used a solid defensive effort to jump out to a 38-19 lead at the break as the Beavers forced Western Oregon to commit 11 turnovers in the first half while limiting the Wolves to just 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the field.
With the score 57-38 with 11:29 left in the second half, the Wolves would use an 11-0 run to cut the Oregon State lead to nine; however, the Beavers responded with a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the game away.
Three Oregon State players scored in double figures in the win, led by Tarver, who was 8-of-9 from the field while adding six rebounds, five assists and four steals in the victory. Calvin Haynes had 15 points while Omari Johnson added 12 for Oregon State.
Matt Schmidt had 11 points to lead Western Oregon as the Wolves could not find a rhythm on offense, going 20-of-67 from the field (29.9 percent) and just 6-of-27 from behind the arc.
The Beavers held a commanding 58-24 edge in points in the paint and a 16-5 edge in second chance points as 11 different players scored for Oregon State in the victory.
Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 13, at 6:00 p.m. as the Beavers travel to Lubbock, Texas, to open the regular season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the opener of the 'Duel in the Desert.'
