Ardies, Smith Capture SDSU Doubles Title
Nov. 8, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Washington women's tennis wrapped up its fall season this afternoon at the SDSU Fall Classic, and Joyce Ardies and Samantha Smith added some hardware to the trophy case, taking the top doubles flight at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Ardies typically forms one half of the 17th-ranked doubles team in the country, but her partner, Denise Dy, was in Connecticut this weekend advancing to the semifinals at the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, so she teamed with Smith whose usual teammate Lina Xu did not make the trip.
Ardies and Smith went 3-0 on the weekend, today defeating San Diego State's Ellison sisters on their home courts, 8-5. They also beat duos from UC Irvine and Oklahoma over the past two days.
UW's senior co-captain also came up just short of taking the singles title today. Ardies and Irvine's Brooke Bartlett split the first two sets in the singles final, but Bartlett came through late for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win.
Other UW wins Sunday came from Aleksandra Malovic and Aleksandra Krsljanin, who both won consolation singles matches against players from San Diego State and UC Irvine, respectively. Junior Vanja Radunovic also blanked UC Irvine's Ali Murphy, 6-0, 6-0, and sophomore Ashley Anderson beat Irvine's Miranda Young in straight sets.
The Huskies will now take some time off before picking up the season in the new year. Washington starts with the Michigan Invitational from Jan. 14-17.
