Bruins Blank No. 17 Washington State, 2-0
Nov. 8, 2009
Pullman, Wash. - A pair of first-half goals from Chelsea Cline and Kristina Larsen were all the Bruins needed, as the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-0 victory over No. 17 Washington State at the Lower Soccer Field on Sunday.
UCLA, which closes out the regular season winning 16 of its last 17 matches, improves to 17-2-1 overall and 8-1 in the Pac-10. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 13-5-2 and 5-2-2 in conference play.
The Bruins got on the board in the 15th minute when Cline headed in a free kick sent into the box by senior Lauren Cheney. It marked Cline's third goal of the season. With the assist, Cheney surpasses teammate Sydney Leroux for first place on the team in scoring with 33 points (13g, 7a).
UCLA would score again just before halftime when Larsen ran onto a loose ball in the Cougar box, firing a low shot past Washington State goalkeeper Ariana Byrd.
Both teams played scoreless soccer for the second half. The Bruins nearly had two more goals on the day, with both Cheney and Leroux bouncing shots off the post in the 35th and 71st minutes, respectively.
The 64-team bracket for the NCAA Tournament will be announced tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. (PST) on ESPNews.
