Cougars Battle Washington at Head of the Lake

Pullman, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team competed in the 29th annual Head of the Lake Regatta Sunday morning in Seattle. The last of three regattas for WSU this fall, the Head of the Lake proved to be its most contested race, after it defeated Gonzaga each of the previous two weeks.
For the second consecutive year, the Cougar varsity eight placed second in the Women's Collegiate/Open 8+ event by finishing eight seconds behind the first place Washington crew. With a time of 17:49.64, WSU finished in front of Gonzaga, University of Victoria and Minnesota.
'All in all it was a successful day,' WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'I think we raced well, and we're looking forward to getting back at training.'
The Cougar second varsity eight also came in second place in the Women's Collegiate JV 8+ event for the second straight year. WSU finished with a time of 18:59.42, approximately 30 seconds behind first place Washington.
The WSU third varsity eight won the Women's Collegiate 3V 8+ event. It finished with a time of 18:56.64, approximately three seconds faster than second place Washington. In the same event the Cougar fourth varsity eight came in third place overall, with a time of 19:20.73, and finished approximately 50 seconds ahead of the Washington fourth varsity eight.
WSU will next begin winter training, followed by the start of the spring season March 20, 2010, with Class Day races at Wawawai Landing.
