Women's Soccer Defeats Arizona in Finale, Awaits NCAA Fate

Nov. 8, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State women's soccer team secured a key victory in its quest for a NCAA Women's Soccer Championship berth as the Beavers defeated Arizona, 3-0, in the regular season finale on Sunday.

'Every player fought hard for one another in an extremely tough environment,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'The match was physical and it wasn't the prettiest of victories, but we did all the little things we needed to do to come away with a win. It's been a great year and we're hopeful we will have the opportunity to continue playing.'

With the victory, Oregon State concludes the regular season with a mark of 12-7-1, 4-5-0 in Pac-10 Conference play. The Beavers, who last went to the tournament in 1994, will learn their NCAA fate on Monday as the 64-team field will be announced at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN News.

Oregon State left little doubt against Arizona as the Beavers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Melinda Ingalls put the Beavers ahead just 80 seconds into the match as her goal in the second minute gave Oregon State an early 1-0 lead. Off a pass from senior Melissa Peck, Ingalls found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Chelsea Buckland put Oregon State in control in the 30th minute as the freshman connected on her team leading seventh goal of the season. Brittney Sheffield had an assist on the play as Oregon State carried a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Arizona was unable to cut into the lead throughout the second half as senior Najma Homidi put the finishing touches on the victory as her unassisted goal in the 90th minute gave the Beavers a 3-0 victory.

Colleen Boyd made two saves in net to record the shutout victory as Arizona keeper Ashley Jett made one save in net in the loss.

Arizona held a slight, 9-7 edge in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks as fouls were even at 13-13.

Oregon State, No. 19 in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, finishes the regular season with 12 victories, the fourth-highest win total in school history and the most since the Beavers finished the 1995 season with a 14-6-0 mark.
