Trojans Strong In Gifford Collegiate 1st Round
Nov. 9, 2009
Junior Daniel Park, sophomore Steve Lim and freshman Sam Smith all carded 2-under 70s to help the USC men's golf team get off to a good start at the 2009 Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle on Monday (Nov. 9) in San Martin, Calif.
USC finished fourth at 7-under 353, three back of first-place Duke (350) and one back of Lamar and Oklahoma State, who are tied at 352. Unlike most collegiate events where five players play and four scores count per round, six play and five count at the CordeValle.
Starting off the 10th tee with the rest of the Trojans, Park got off to a fine start and made the turn at 3-under. He double bogeyed 1, but finished the remaining eight holes at 1-under. Smith was 1-over after nine holes, but birdied 4 and then eagled the par 5 6th hole for a 3-under back 9.
Lim also had an eagle, his on the par 5 15th hole, that helped him to a 4-under front 9. He was still at 4-under until a double bogey on 18 dropped him back to 2-under, where he finished tied for 12th with Park and Smith.
Junior Bo DeHuff tied for 22nd at 1-under 71, freshman Martin Trainer tied for 32nd at par 72 (he also had an eagle on a 4-under front 9) while freshman T.J. Vogel tied for 67th at 4-over 76.
