UCLA Bests Master's College in Basketball Exhibition

UCLA earned an 80-66 win over The Master's College in a women's basketball exhibition contest on Monday night in Pauley Pavilion in its final tune-up for the regular season. Five Bruins scored in double figures led by senior guard Erica Tukiainen's 16 points. The Bruins never trailed in the game and pulled away from the Mustangs in the final minutes.

Junior forward Nina Earl's basket and free throw with 15:40 to play gave UCLA its first double-digit lead of the contest at 47-37. The Bruins built the lead up to as many as 13, 57-44, with 10:06 to play before The Master's College battled back and sliced the advantage to six at 60-54 at the 4:43 mark. UCLA answered and regained its double figure cushion on a three-point basket by Tukiainen which boosted the UCLA lead back to 65-55 with 3:57 on the clock. UCLA moved out to its biggest lead in the game, 14 points, twice during the final seconds of the game.

Earl helped get thing started for the Bruins by pouring in eight points and grabbing five rebounds in the first half as UCLA jumped out in front 35-29 at halftime. Tukiainen added seven first-half points, including a three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded to end the first 20 minutes. The Master's College connected on six three-point shots in the first half to stay close to the Bruins. UCLA's biggest first-half lead was seven points at 32-25. There were four ties in the half, the last coming at 22-all with 4:04 on the clock. Neither team shot well in the half as UCLA converted on 35% of its shots and the Mustangs hit 24.1%.

Earl and junior guard Doreena Campbell each finished with 13 points for the Bruins.Junior guard Darxia Morris and sophomore guard Rebekah Gardner were also in double digits for UCLA with 10 points each. UCLA controlled the boards 54-38 and outshot the visitors 40.8% to 33.3% for the game. Freshman Markel Walker paced UCLA with 11 boards and added eight points. The Master's College finished with 11 three-point shots for the game. Brittany Henderson led The Master's College with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Mustangs finished 11-29 from three-point range in the game.

UCLA (19-12 a year ago) will open up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14 against Illinois State (champions of the Missouri Valley Conference last season) in the first round of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Challenge. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT (12:30 Pacific). Host Iowa plays Santa Clara in the other first-round matchup. The winners and losers on day one will meet on Sunday, Nov. 15 with the games times set for 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. CT (9:30 / Noon Pacific).
