Mays Named Semifinalist For Bednarik, Thorpe, Lott
Nov. 11, 2009
The process for picking the top players for college football's post-season awards is beginning and so far several Trojans have been named as semifinalists.
Safety Taylor Mays is a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award (given to the nation's top defensive player), Thorpe Award (top defensive back) and Lott Trophy (top defensive impact player). The 2-time All-American first teamer was a finalist for the Thorpe Award in 2008.
USC's other semifinalists are OG-C Jeff Byers for the Campbell Trophy (top scholar-athlete), LB Chris Galippo for the Butkus Award (top linebacker), PK Jordan Congdon for the Groza Award (top placekicker) and QB Matt Barkley for the O'Brien Award (top quarterback). Barkley is the only freshman among the O'Brien Award semifinalists.
Semifinalists for other awards will be named in the coming weeks.
