Rivalry Red Out
Nov. 11, 2009
TUCSON – What’s more fun than a rivalry match?
This Friday the 18th-ranked Arizona Volleyball team will take on Arizona State at 7 p.m. in McKale Center. Fans are encouraged to come out, be loud and wear their favorite red.
The Wildcats are in the midst of a solid regular season with an overall record of 17-7. Impressively UA has a record of 4-5 when facing ranked teams and an overall conference mark of 6-7.
Currently eight of the possible 10 Pac-10 teams are ranked nationally. In preparation for the NCAA tournament, the Wildcats look to be extremely battle-tested after facing such a rigorous schedule. But there is still unfinished business when it comes to the regular season as UA could potentially post its best conference showing in years.
When UA and ASU faced off in Tempe in October, the Wildcats received standout performances from Whitney Dosty and Courtney Karst in route to a 3-1 victory over the Sun Devils. Be a part of the action as Arizona goes for the season sweep, something it hasn’t done against ASU since 2005.
An added twist to the rivalry this year is the introduction of the State Farm Territorial Cup Series. Both schools will compete against each other in 18 common varsity intercollegiate sports. Currently ASU is up 2-1 after its two cross country teams finished above UA in the Pac-10 Championships. Arizona Soccer beat ASU in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime affair to give the Wildcats their one point.
Since Arizona already defeated ASU once this year in volleyball, if it wins then the score would be tied 2-2 going into the UA-ASU football game on Nov. 28. If UA should fall on Friday, no points would be awarded.
