Four Women of Troy Earn All-Pac-10 Accolades
Nov. 12, 2009
With its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance fast approaching, the USC women's soccer team has landed four players on this year's All-Pac-10 honor roll. Led by senior goalkeeper Kristin Olsen's selection to the All-Pac-10 First Team, junior midfielder Alyssa Davila picks up her first Pac-10 award with a spot on the Second Team. Meanwhile, senior Meagan Holmes has earned her third All-Pac-10 honor with an Honorable Mention pick and freshman Samantha Johnson has been named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team to open her Trojan playing career.
Senior goalkeeper Kristin Olsen is winding down her illustrious career as a Trojan as the all-time program leader in wins (42) and shutouts (27), and ranks No. 2 all-time in career saves (247). A 2007 All-American and All-Pac-10 Second Team pick, Olsen is on the Hermann Trophy Watch List this season and grabbed back-to-back Pac-10 Player of the Week accolades on the way into this year's All-Pac-10 First Team selection. She leads the league in saves (5.32 spg, .835 pct) and shutouts (8) and set a new career high in saves this season with 13 in a single match.
Junior midfielder Alyssa Davila has had a standout season for the Trojans en route to her first career honors from the Pac-10. The All-Pac-10 Second Team selection leads USC in scoring with nine goals and five saves entering the postseason. She's scored two two-goal games for the Women of Troy and provided a team-high four game-winning goals. With this season's efforts, Davila has moved up on the USC career ladders to rank No. 3 in game-winners (11), No. 8 in goals (21) and No. 9 in points (50).
Senior defender Meagan Holmes has battled injuries in the past three seasons, but has rebounded back onto the Pac-10 honor roll. An All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention recipient and an All-American as a freshman in 2005, Holmes was named to the 2006 All-Pac-10 Second Team as a sophomore. A knee injury took her out of the 2007 season and limited her play in 2008 and the start of this season , but the reliable redshirt senior has received 2009 All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention this year as an anchor on the Trojan back line. She's started 73 of the 74 games she's played in as a Trojan.
New to the Trojan lineup this season is freshman forward Samantha Johnson, who has earned a place on the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. A starter in 18 of 19 games this year, Johnson's talent and tactics up top got her noticed quickly by Pac-10 opponents. She's second on the team in scoring with four goals and four assists, including the game-winner against then-No. 21 Oklahoma State when the teams first met earlier this season in Oklahoma.
USC's four All-Pac-10 honorees take the field tomorrow with their Trojan teammates against Oklahoma State once again in an NCAA First Round clash in Santa Clara, Calif., at 5:30 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 13).
