Meet The Cardinal: Alex Fisher

Nov. 12, 2009

Each week GoStanford.com will feature a Q&A with a different member of the 2009 Stanford Women's Volleyball team. This week get to know senior Alex Fisher.

My goals for this season are…
I want a ring. Pure and simple.

My favorite team to watch as a kid was…
I was a big Stanford junkie. Stanford basketball and volleyball players were my heroes. Brevin Knight—wherever you are—you’re the man.

The talent I’d most like to have is…
The ability to multi-task. I literally can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

The best thing about Stanford is…
The amazing people.

My funniest teammate is…
Janjan and I think we make a pretty hilarious tag-team combo (our teammates disagree). Just as she once likened me to the forbidden fruit, I would like to point out that Janet’s sense of humor is something akin to a dog whistle—just out of range for the average human to grasp.

Lucky for her, I’m no average human.

The sport I am the worst at is…
I imagine it would be sychronized swimming. The water/dance combo would be deadly for me, but I’m okay with that…

Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is…
Fact: I was born with bright red hair.

My favorite volleyball memory is…
Janet’s freshman year, she didn’t speak. She was absolutely silent and showed no signs of personality, whatsoever. Except to me. When nobody else was looking, Janet would shoot me the strangest faces and do creepy dances. When I tried to point them out to our teammates, she’d instantly resume stone-face and act innocent. This routine continued for 3 months… 3 months of great memories.

My biggest pet peeve is…
I’m going to have to go with the phrase “pet peeve.” It’s kind of pretentious, don’t you think?

If I could travel anywhere in the world I would go to…
Greece is my current fixation, don’t ask me why.

The best advice I’ve received was…
Eitan Gelber (our team trainer) speaks in proverbs. Here are some examples of his daily sayings:

“Pain is just a sensation”

“Soreness is just weakness leaving the body”

“The turtle walks very slowly, Miss Fisher, but he lives for 100 years”

“The rush is from the Devil, and slowliness is divine (except in sports)”

And one non-Eitan quote that keeps me going…

“Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go..”
