Trojans Wrap Up Fall Practice With Cardinal Gold World Series

Nov. 12, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- The USC baseball team wraps up its fall practice schedule with the Cardinal/Gold World Series, Thursday-Saturday (November 18-20), at Dedeaux Field. Thursday's game will start at 2:45 p.m. with a 1:45 p.m. start on Friday. Saturday's start will be determined later.

USC returns 24 letterwinners from last year's squad, including infielder/pitcher Ricky Oropesa (.314, 13 HR, 48 RBI in 2009) and right-handed pitcher Andrew Triggs (5-3, 3.96 ERA, 75.0 IP, 50 SO).

The Trojans have welcomed many newcomers including right-handed pitcher Nick Berhel (Benicia/De La Salle HS), infielder Matthew Foat (Rescue/Ponderosa HS/Sierra College), right-handed pitcher Shuhei Fujiya (Irvine/Orange Coast College/Northern Iowa), left-handed pitcher Mario Gallardo (Los Angeles/Westchester HS/West Los Angeles College), outfielder Alex Glenn (McDonough, Ga./Henry County HS), catcher Casey Husband (Del Mar/Cathedral HS), infielder/outfielder Cade Kreuter (Newhall/Hart HS), infielder Adam Landecker (Calabasas/Calabasas HS), right-handed pitcher Logan Odom (Central Point, Ore./North Medford HS)/Western Nevada CC), catcher Richard Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS), right-handed pitcher Brett Williams (Laguna Niguel/Loyola Marymount/Orange Coast College) and infielder Taylor Wrenn (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland HS/Manatee College).

Glenn (37th round selection by Florida in the 2009 MLB draft) has been seeing a lot of time in center field for the Trojans. Fujiya, who transferred after Northern Iowa disbanded its program last season, is in line to be the Trojans' closer after recording nine saves in 2009. Williams was a member of an Orange Coast squad that won the 2009 state championship and posted a 4-2 record with a 1.97 ERA and five saves. Wrenn has been getting a solid look as the possible starting shortstop for the Trojans.

Oropesa has made the move to third base with the chances of freshman transfer Mike Greco (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep/Army) getting a look at first base.

USC opens the 2010 season on Feb. 19 with a three-game series at Cal Poly. Every baseball game on the schedule will be broadcast live with a video webcast for all home games exclusively on usctrojans.com.
