USC Visits Desert To Face Arizona, ASU

The USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams face their stiffest test of the season thus far when they travel to face Pac-10 foes Arizona on Friday and Arizona State on Saturday. The Trojans will swim in Tucson against the Wildcats at 2 p.m (MST) on Friday and will take on the Sun Devils in Tempe at noon (MST) on Saturday.
A year ago, the men's and women's squads swept favored Arizona at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Women of Troy defeated Arizona, 164-136, while the men won, 152-91. The women defeated Arizona State, 187-48, while the men took down the Sun Devils, 130-67.
The women's squad enters the meet at 7-0 while the men's team is 6-0. Both teams swept Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield in three separate dual meets consisting of yards, long course meters and short course meters. The women's team also knocked off Oregon State.
USC's women's team is led by sophomore Katinka Hosszu, a 2009 World Championship gold and silver medalist as well as a three-time finalist at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Sophomore diver Victoria Ishimatsu is another returning All-American while seniors Dina Hegazy and Krissy Forelli, junior Ellie Doran and sophomore Tanya Krisman are returning NCAA Championships participants.
On the men's side, USC will be led by senior co-captain James Martin and senior Zoltan Povazsay, both 2009 NCAA Championships participants while sophomore diver Harrison Jones is a returning All-American. Juniors Dillon Connolly and diver Steven Starks and sophomores Josh Joiner and Patrick White are also returning NCAA Championships participants for the Trojans. Among the departed Trojans from last season are former All-American Vanni Mangoni as well as NCAA Championships participant Kevin Bartell.
So far in the young season, Hosszu has posted three NCAA `B' cuts in long course meters. She has a 2:03.30 in the 200m free, a 2:18.85 in the 200m IM and a 1:01.97 in the 100m fly. She also has a short course meters `B' cut in the 200m free (2:01.85) and a yards `B' cut in the 200y fly (1:56.48).
Junior Lyndsay DePaul has a `B' cut in the 200 IM (2:20.12, lcm) and them in the 200y free (1:49.09) and 200y fly (1:57.49), freshman Jessica Schmitt has won in the 100y breast (1:01.95) and freshman Yumi So has `B' cuts in the 100y (54.26) and 100m (1:00.96, scm) fly. Krisman has one in the 200y fly (1:59.90).
For the men, Connolly has an `B' cut in the 100y breast (55.35) while freshman Clement Lefert has one in the 100 fly (55.27, lcm).
Also competing this weekend for the Trojans are a handful of swimmers set to race at the Perry Senior Invite, a USA Swimming sponsored competition in Fullerton, Calif.
