Nov. 13, 2009
LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Williams (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS) had 14 kills while hitting .364 (14-2-33) and tied a season high with eight blocks (four solo) as the No. 17 USC Women of Troy defeated the No. 4 Washington Huskies, 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13), in Pac-10 Conference action at the Galen Center. Junior teammate Audrey Eichler (Pacific Palisades/Boston College) added to a strong night for the USC middles with a season-high 15 kills and four blocks.
Senior All-American Jessica Gysin recorded 15 kills for USC (16-9, 5-8) while registering a career-high 20 digs while sophomore outside hitter Alex Jupiter had a team-high 21 kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Kendall Bateman had 57 assists, seven digs and three block assists while senior libero Alli Hillgren chipped in 28 digs.
Airial Salvo led Washington (20-4, 10-4) with 17 kills, 18 digs and six blocks while hitting .390 (17-1-41). Kindra Carlson had 15 kills with seven block assists, five digs and two aces. Becky Perry added 13 kills while setter Jenna Hagglund matched Bateman with 54 assists, 12 digs, three block assists and two kills. Lauren Barfield was a monster in the middle for the Huskies with 11 block assists.
Williams hit a quick set from Bateman in the first to start a 7-1 run as back-to-back blocks gave USC an 8-2 lead. Bianca Rowland answered with two straight kills but USC added two more blocks for a 10-4 advantage. A Husky hitting error put USC ahead, 18-12, but Salvo used three kills to get UW back within three at 19-16. Jupiter hammered the next shot for the Women of Troy and Bateman later added a service ace to lead by five, 22-17. After Jill Collymore registered a kill, USC closed out the set as Williams stuffed a UW attempt and finished with a spike off the block in the middle.
Jupiter started the second set with a kill and later hit a service ace for a 3-0 lead as Washington took a quick timeout. Both teams traded points towards a 9-5 USC score, but a 4-1 run capped by a Collymore service ace cut the deficit to one at 10-9. Roleder's service ace gave USC its own 4-1 run to lead, 15-11. Carlson and Lauren Barfield stuffed a USC attempt to make it 16-14 in favor of the Trojans. The Trojans answered with a Williams/Kimmee Roleder block for the 18-14 score. Gysin punched a ball at the net to give USC the lead at four, 22-18. Salvo got the Huskies going again with two kills and another Carlson/Barfield stuff tied it at 22-22. Eichler's kill gave set point to the Women of Troy, but back-to-back errors turned things around for the Huskies as Perry finished the rally with a kill to tie the match.
A backrow kill by Jupiter put USC ahead 5-1 in the third set. After Roleder made it 10-7 in favor of the Women of Troy, Perry put two straight down and Carlson served up an ace to tie it at 10-10. It was another Carlson/Barfield block that led UW to a 15-14 advantage. Williams and Bateman blocked to tie it at 19-19, but a USC service error sparked a late run for the Huskies. Perry made it 22-19 with a Trojan hitting error later making it 23-20. Eichler brought the Trojans within one at 23-22, but Salvo tallied a key point and Barfield and Hagglund stopped a Jupiter hit from the left side to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Perry looked to put the Trojans away with back-to-back terminations in the fourth set and a 5-1 lead for the Huskies. Eichler got the hat trick with three straight points to tie it at 7-7. Washington later took the lead, 14-12, but another service error sparked the Trojans for five straight points and the 18-14 lead. A UW triple block brought them within one at 19-18. Jupiter and Salvo traded kills, but another Jupiter kill and Williams solo block made it 22-20 for USC. Gysin then sent the match into the fifth set with the kill as USC recorded a match-high .393 (15-4-28) for the set.
For the final set, Williams put the Trojans on the board first with a kill. A Husky error followed by another Williams solo block made it 3-0 for USC. Carlson recorded the Huskies' first point and later used a tip shot to make it 4-2 for the Trojans. At 5-3, Gysin started a streak of three straight as Jupiter hammered one of back-to-back kills as USC led, 8-3, on the switch. Williams kept the Trojans ahead by five at 10-5. Carlson put the momentum back to the Huskies as Washington cobbled together two straight blocks for the 10-8 score as USC called a timeout. Williams came out with a kill on the overpass, but a service error kept the score at 11-9. Gysin tooled a shot off the Husky block as USC led, 12-9. Carlson tallied another kill and a triple block made it 12-11 as the Trojans called their final timeout. Eichler used a kill for a 13-11 lead before Rowland sided out for the 13-12 score. Gysin gave USC match point on a shot off the block before Washington held serve on Carlson's final kill of the night. Jupiter went one on one off the left side and hit one of the fingertips of the block to secure the win in the match.
