TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona swimming and diving team continued its dual meet season today against USC at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Competing with a determined focus all afternoon, the Arizona men topped the USC men, 177-123, while the Arizona women beat their female counterparts, 180-119.
The Wildcats won both opening relays to set the tone for the meet. Ana Agy, Annie Chandler, Whitney Lopus and Andrea Boritzke took the women’s event with a time of 3:41.40. On the men’s side, Jake Tapp, Carl Mickelson, Bryan O’Connor and Jordan Smith out-paced Arizona’s “A” medley relay team with a time of 3:16.37 to win the event.
Agy impressively won four events Friday, taking the 100 and 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly and was part of the 400 medley relay team. Agy’s time in the 100 back was good for an NCAA “B” cut time.
After winning four events a week ago against UNLV and Wisconsin, Smith was just as dominant for the Arizona men on Friday. The senior from Reno, Nev., took home the 50 free in 20.53 and the 100 free in 44.92. Smith was also on both winning relays.
Regaining her 2008 form, UA Robie medalist Justine Schluntz won the 50 free women’s event with a time of 23.77. Schluntz also finished third in the 100 free and swam the second leg of the winning 400 free relay.
At the Kasser Family Pool, the Arizona divers were not able to duplicate the swimmers success over USC although junior Ben Grado finished runner-up in both the men’s one-meter and three-meter events. Grado had scores of 334.80 and 399.53, respectively. Arizona’s highest finish on the women’s side was in the three-meter event where Ainsley Oliver had a third-place score of 276.75.
The Cats are now undefeated in through their dual meet schedule, beating UNLV and Wisconsin on Friday and Southern California today. The swimmers will next compete at the Texas Invitational the first weekend of December while the divers will host the Arizona Diving Invitational next weekend at the Kasser Family Pool.
