Springfield, Ore. Junior Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.) posted a 39th place finish to lead the Oregon State cross country team to a ninth place finish out of 25 at the 2009 NCAA West Regional.

The 6,000-meter race took place at the Springfield Country Club, hosted by the University of Oregon. The 184-runner field competed on a relatively flat course with temperatures in the low 40s with cloudy skies.

“I am really proud of how we competed today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “This fall has had a lot of challenges with all the transitions staff and team wise, so for these seven to finish the season off with our best overall meet of the year, it was really gratifying for everyone. Just two weeks ago we were eighth in the Pac-10, but we told them these last two weeks it is never over until you race your last step. I have to give them a lot of credit as they completely bought in. Ninth place ties us with the finish we had last year, which is the best finish in our young program’s history, so to do that today, speaks volumes. We also to beat UCLA, who beat us by a lot two weeks ago, which really shows how much better we ran today.”

Chesimet finished the course in 21:59.94 with freshman Sandra Martinez (Yakima, Wash.) coming in second for the Beavers in 52nd place in a time of 22:12.99. Junior Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.), who early in the race was running one of the top five splits, came in 58th in 22:23.41.

Junior Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Sabrina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.) rounded out the scoring runners for Oregon State, finishing 79th and 87th, respectively.

Also competing were redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) and redshirt freshman Olivia Poblacion (Portland, Ore.), who finished 96th and 146th.

The ninth place finish ties the highest the Beavers have finished at the NCAA West Regional since the program was reinstated in 2004. The Oregon State cross country team ends its season but has a lot to look forward to in the 2010 season.

“Our entire team is back next season, plus all of the redshirts, so today was just what we all needed,” Sullivan said. “Besides the host school, Oregon, we had by far the largest crowd of supporters there today. You could see a sea of orange and black everywhere.”
