No. 17 Stanford Falls To Cal In Season Finale
Nov. 14, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - No. 17 Stanford concluded its regular season on Saturday night with a 1-0 loss to California. The loss dropped Stanford to 10-5-2 (4-4-2 Pac-10), but the Cardinal body of work through the season appears to be strong enough for its first NCAA bid since 2002.
The rivalry game was played at a high level of intensity as Cal looked to end their disappointing season on a positive note. The game featured 32 fouls and five yellow cards with neither team willing to give into its Bay Area rival.
Cal got on the board in just the 21st minute when Andrew Wiedeman slipped a through ball to the left side where Jacob Wilson was charging at the net. Wilson took on and beat John Moore for his first goal of the season.
Stanford responded with several good chances before the half, but could not finish a tying goal.
In the 32nd minute, Cameron Lamming had a powerful shot from distance, but the bending ball sailed just high.
Ten minutes later Daniel Leon had a crack at shot from outside the box, but David Bingham of Cal made a diving save.
Stanford outshot Cal 6-5 in the period, but went to the break trailing by a goal.
Stanford came out on the offensive again in the second half and immediately had an opportunity when a cross found the head of Adam Jahn, but again Bingham was again their for the save.
Stanford outshot Cal 7-3 in the second half with the last opportunity perhaps being its best. With less than two minutes to play, Michael Strickland played a ball across the goal that found the foot of a cutting Dersu Abolfathi, but his shot was redirected right at Bingham, who made the save.
The game ended in a 1-0 win for Cal as the 1,376 fans on hand at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium for senior day left disappointed. Before the game Strickland, Moore, Evan Morgan and T.J. Novak were honored as graduating seniors.
The Cardinal will now await its fate when the NCAA selections are announced on Monday. Stay tuned to gostanford.com for all the latest on the possible announcement of the Cardinal entering the postseason.
