No. 17 USC Beats No. 25 Washington State In Four

LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Williams (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS) posted a career-high 19 kills without an error for a .559 night (19-0-34) Saturday as the No. 17 USC Women of Troy beat the No. 25 Washington State Cougars, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 28-26, 25-16) in a Pac-10 match at the Galen Center.
Williams was one of five USC players to post double figure kills. Audrey Eichler had 13 kills and five blocks while Alex Jupiter posted a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Kimmee Roleder chipped in 12 kills and eight digs while Jessica Gysin had 11 kills and eight digs.
Sophomore setter Kendall Bateman recorded 60 assists and eight digs for USC (17-9, 6-8).
Cassie Robbins had 12 kills with no errors for a .571 (12-0-21) night for Washington State (16-10, 5-10) while Meagan Ganzer had a team-high 14 kills. Brittany Tillman added 12 kills while setter Renee Bordelon had 49 assists.
After the Cougars battled late in the first set to go up 1-0 in the match, USC started hot in the second set with an 11-3 run. WSU got to within six at 18-12 before Jupiter hit two kills to start a streak of four straight points as USC evened the match.
In the third set, the Cougars held set point at 24-21. WSU served into the net and Eichler and Gysin went back-to-back terminations to even it at 24 apiece. Both teams traded points and Ganzer gave set point again to the Cougars at 26-25. Eichler tied it and Jupiter went back-to-back with the set winner tooled off the Cougar block for a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Women of Troy hit a match-high .429 in the final set to secure the win with a key 9-2 run putthing the Cougars away.
USC concludes its road portion of the 2009 Pac-10 schedule next weekend on Friday (Nov. 20) at Oregon and Saturday (Nov. 21) at Oregon State. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
Notes: Lauren Williams finished the weekend with 33 kills against only two errors for a .463 hitting percentage (33-2-67) with 11 blocks (five solo, six assisted)...Kendall Bateman, who was second in the nation for assists per set last weekend, improved her season average to 12.23 aps...Alex Jupiter has 11 double-doubles this season with nine of them coming against Top 25 opponents.
