Moore Leads Cougars by Aggies in Season Opener
Nov. 15, 2009
PULLMAN - The Washington State University women's basketball team won its 2009-10 season opener Sunday at Friel Court, defeating UC Davis 64-54 in front of 1,206 fans. The attendance total is the highest for a women's-only home opener since the Cougars began playing Pacific-10 Conference basketball in 1986-87.
'This was a tremendous opening game for us,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'We knew we were going to be tested because their coach does a phenomenal job and they had a lot of talent returning this year. I am proud of our team for their effort on defense and putting the game away.'
Freshman guard KiKi Moore scored a team-high 17 points in the first regular-season game of her career, leading the Cougars to their first season-opening win since 2005-06, a 66-57 victory at home over Pepperdine.
Moore also recorded a game-high four steals, including one that sealed the victory for the Cougars. With less than a minute remaining in the game, the Aggies had cut what was as much as a 12-point Cougar lead earlier in the half to six. UC Davis was looking to shave more off its deficit after rebounding a missed shot by Moore, but the freshman guard stole the ball from the Aggies' Heidi Heintz at midcourt and extended WSU's lead to eight on a lay-up with 36 seconds left on the clock.
'KiKi puts defense at a high premium,' Daugherty said. 'She's always thinking steal, steal, steal, and that's our mentality as a team this year. We're going to lock you down and make you earn it. This is the type of defense that is going to make you struggle.'
It was a back-and-forth first half, with seven lead changes between the Cougars and Aggies. Once UC Davis had built an eight-point lead (25-17), its largest advantage of the game, the Cougars came storming back. WSU regained the lead at 27-25 on a 3-pointer from freshman guard Ireti Amojo in the midst of a 14-1 run. The Cougars held UC Davis to only one field goal over the final seven-plus minutes, and entered intermission with a 37-31 lead.
UC Davis went nearly seven minutes without scoring to open the second half as the Cougars extended their lead to 12 at 43-31. The Aggies were able to get back to within four, but WSU was able to hold on to its lead and put the game away.
The Aggies shot just 35.2 percent from the floor (19-of-54), including 25.8 percent in the second half (8-of-31). WSU also forced 21 Aggie turnovers and recorded 13 steals.
Offensively, WSU made nearly 42 percent of its shots (26-of-62) and scored 16 points off 18 offensive rebounds.
Sophomore guard April Cook, who led the Cougars with 14.0 points per game last season, added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Cougars kick off a four-game road trip next week at Kansas State. The Cougars and Wildcats are slated to tip-off at 5 p.m. (PT) in Manhattan, Kan. The game will be televised by FSN Kansas City.
