Nov. 16, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - Eight Huskies, three men and five women, were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-West Region team this afternoon, based on their finish at Saturday's Regional meet.
Washington's top-ranked women's cross country squad took the Regional title for the second year in a row at the Springfield Country Club, hosted by Oregon. Sophomore Kendra Schaaf won the individual title, the first by a Husky in almost thirty years, dating back to Regina Joyce in 1980.
Schaaf was followed by four more Huskies in the Top-10, as UW scored 25 points to beat 5th-ranked Oregon by 41 points. Junior Mel Lawrence was third, junior Kailey Campbell was fourth, senior Katie Follett was seventh, and sophomore Christine Babcock was 10th. It is the third All-Region honor of Follett's career, the second for Lawrence and Babcock, and the first for Campbell and Schaaf.
Leading the men's team to a fourth-place finish, and just 11 points behind 3rd-ranked Oregon, was senior Colton Tully-Doyle, who was 18th overall to earn his first All-Region honor. Senior Kelly Spady was 20th and earned his second-straight All-West Region award. Redshirt freshman Joey Bywater, running his first career 10k, surged to 23rd-place down the stretch and also garnered his first honor.
The NCAA Championships await the cross country squads next Monday, November 23, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
