Gerhart, Ayers and Tavecchio Named Pac-10 Football Players of the Week

Nov. 16, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Running back Toby Gerhart of Stanford, linebacker Akeem Ayers of UCLA and kicker Giorgio Tavecchio of California have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.

Gerhart, a senior from Norco, Calif., keyed the Stanford offense in the Cardinal’s 55-21 upset road win at No. 11-ranked USC.  Gerhard rushed 29 times for 178 yards (6.1) and three touchdowns of 1, 3 and 6 yards.  He also added a reception for 9 yards.  Stanford rushed for 325 yards and five touchdowns against the Trojans and piled up 469 yards total offense.  It marks the second week in a row Gerhart has been selected for Pac-10 offensive player of the week honors.

Ayers made the big defensive plays in UCLA’s 43-7 road win at Washington State.  Ayers intercepted two passes, both of which set up Bruin touchdowns, and had two quarterback sacks (-14) among his four solo tackles.  The Bruin defense limited WSU to seven first downs and 181 yards total offense (73 rushing, 108 passing) and forced four turnovers, including three interceptions.

Tavecchio, a sophomore from Moraga, Calif., accounted for 12 of California’s 24 points in the Golden Bears’ 24-16 win against No. 24-ranked Arizona.  Tavecchio was good on 4-of-5 field goal attempts, connecting from 46, 22, 46 and 22 yards (his miss was from 47 yards).

Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs LaMichael James of Oregon, Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State, Shane Vereen of California and Chane Moline of UCLA.  Also nominated on defense were cornerback Richard Sherman of Stanford and linebackers Spencer Paysinger of Oregon and Mike Mohamed of California.  Also nominated for special teams play were James Rodgers of Oregon State and Sean Westgate of UCLA.
