BERKELEY - Juniors Steve Sodaro and Kari Karlsson, as well as sophomore Deborah Maier, have been named to the All-West Region team based on their finishes at last Saturday NCAA regional race in Springfield, Ore.
Sodaro completed the men's 10,000-meter circuit in 31:10.42 to claim 16th place, with Karlsson taking 21st in 31:14.40. Maier was 14th in the women's race, finishing her 6,000-meter race in 21:20.43. Each of the top 25 men's and women's finishers earned all-region status.
Sodaro paced the Golden Bears in four meets during the fall, which included an 18th-place finish at the Pac-10 championships Oct. 30. His highest result came at a meet at Sacramento State early in the year where he crossed the line third overall.
Karlsson was Cal's No. 1 runner at the Pre-NCAA Invitational, taking 51st in a strong field full of nationally ranked teams. He was also 27th overall at Pac-10's.
Maier finished as the Bears' top runner in all four meets she competed in this season, which included a sixth-place finish at the Pac-10 championships and a fourth-place finish at the Stanford Invitational.
Cal wrapped up the 2009 cross country season with both the men and women placing eighth at the regional meet last Saturday.
