UCLA and Stanford Make NCAA Tournament Field

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA and STANFORD men’s soccer teams were named to the field of 48 for the 2009 Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament.
Both teams will be vying for the right to compete at the 2009 NCAA Men’s College Cup on December 11 and 13 in Cary, North Carolina, at WakeMed Soccer Park. North Carolina State University, the Town of Cary and the Capital Area Soccer League will host the championship.
The back-to-back Pac-10 Champion Bruins’ (10-3-4) receive a first round by and will host the winner of the Loyola Marymount/Sacramento State match in the second round on Sunday, November 22, at 5 p.m. at Drake Stadium. For UCLA, it marks its 27th-straight and 37th all-time NCAA appearance, the second most in NCAA history. The Bruins have a record of 59-33 (.641) in postseason play and have been crowned NCAA Champions four times - 1985, 1990, 1997, 2002 - and have advanced to the College Cup 12 times, most recently in 2006.
The Cardinal (10-5-2) will make its 11th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance and plays host to St. Mary’s (CA) (10-4-5) in the first round on Thursday, November 19, at 7 p.m on The Farm. It is the first postseason appearance for Stanford since 2002, the year it advanced all the way to the NCAA title match. The Cardinal boasts a 13-9-1 (.587) record in tournament play. Should Stanford advance, it would travel to UC Irvine for the second round on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 6 p.m.
