Cardinal Women Swimming to Toshiba in Long Beach
Nov. 17, 2009
STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford Women's Swimming (3-0) will head to the annual Toshiba Cup, formerly the Nike Cup, in Long Beach for a three-day event featuring 25 teams in the West and hosted by UC San Diego.
Five teams that scored at last year's NCAA Championships will be in attendance starting on Thursday, including defending champion, California, fourth place Stanford, as well as Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara and Nevada.
Stanford should be the favorite amongst the competitors following two wins against NCAA participants Florida and Michigan two weeks ago in the Sunshine State.
All-American and NCAA record holder Julia Smit has five times which rank amongst the top-10 nationally, including the nation's fastest times in the 100 freestyle (49.45) and 200 individual medley (1:57.04). The 19-time All-American out of Mt. Sinai, NY also has the nation's second-fastest 200 backstroke (1:55.71) and 400 IM (4:09.11) times. She is also a part of the nation's fastest 400 relay team, joining Kate Dwelley, Sam Woodward and Kelley Hug with a time of 3:19.52.
The 400 IM should be a competitive showing, with five competitors posting top-15 times this season, including Smit and Liz Smith (4:18.91) from Stanford, Cal's Caitlin Leverenz (4:13.78) and Heather White (4:19.12) and UCLA's Lauren Hall (4:18.32).
Smith also ranks amongst the nation's elite in the 200 breaststroke, where she has the eighth-fastest time (2:13.52) as well as the 200 IM (2:01.69), where she is 12th. Leverenz (sixth) and UCLA's Brittany Beauchan (ninth) all rank in the top-10 in that category.
Sophomore Betsy Webb, after a breakout meet in Florida, has the nation's eighth-best 100 time (49.89), ninth-fastest 100 backstroke (54.78) and 13th-fastest 50 time (23.01), all set in Gainesville.
Newcomer and junior Kelsey Ditto continues to excel in the distance events, posting the ninth-best 500 time (4:47.82) and fifth-best 1650 time (16:24.28). Dwelley has top-10 times in the 100 (ninth) and 200 (seventh) freestyles as well as the 100 butterfly (fifth). Dwelley, Smit, Andi Murez and Kelley Hug also have the fourth-fastest 200 relay time (1:33.28).
