Oregon State's Mwanga Named Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Nov. 17, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- For the second-consecutive week, OREGON STATE sophomore forward Danny Mwanga has been named the Pac-10 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for Nov. 9-15, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
In the Beavers 3-2 victory over Washington on Saturday, Mwanga had a hand in all three tallies, scoring two goals and assisting on the game-winner. With OSU trailing 2-0, the Portland, Ore., native scored his first goal in the 41st minute, then added another tally in the 63rd minute to even the score at 2-2, marking his fifth multi-goal game of the season. Later in the 72nd minute, he set up teammate Travis Sanchez for the game deciding goal.
Mwanga becomes the fourth Pac-10 men’s soccer player all-time to earn back-to-back Player of the Week honors. The first player to achieve the feat was UCLA’s McKinley Tennyson, Jr., who was selected on Sept. 12, 2000 and Sept. 19, 2000. Six years later, UCLA’s Maxwell Griffin earned the honors on Sept. 12, 2006 and Sept. 19, 2006. Earlier this season, UCLA midfielder Kyle Nakazawa was selected on Sept. 29, 2009 and Oct. 6, 2009.
Mwanga leads the Pac-10 in goals scored (14), points (30), points per game (1.67) and goals per game (0.78). He ranks fourth in the NCAA in goals per game and 12th in points per game.
This is the second-career weekly honor for Mwanga and Oregon State’s 15th all-time Player of the Week selection.
