LOS ANGELES - Freshman Cody Regis went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Blue Team past the Gold Team, 6-3, in Game 2 (seven innings) of the UCLA baseball program's annual Blue-Gold World Series on Wednesday evening at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The win handed the Blue Team a two-games-to-none series victory. The Bruins will host their final intersquad scrimmage, Game 3, on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The Blue Team broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After loading the bases with one out, sophomore Steve Rodriguez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to send sophomore Marc Navarro home, handing the Blue Team a 4-3 cushion. Regis followed with a two-run double to left field.
Five pitchers combined for six strikeouts and no walks on the Blue Team's staff. Freshman Allen Aguilar (1-0) recorded the final out in the sixth inning to earn the victory. Sophomore Mitchell Beacom recorded the final three outs in the seventh inning to notch his second save in as many Blue-Gold World Series games.
Freshman Derek Klena (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Gold Team, surrendering three runs (all unearned) and five hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
The Blue Team raced to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With runners aboard second and third, freshman Cody Keefer reached safely on an infield single, allowing freshman Beau Amaral to score. An ensuing balk with runners on the corners pushed home sophomore Tyler Rahmatulla.
The Gold Team reduced its deficit to one run in the top of the second. Senior Justin Uribe, serving as the Gold Team's captain, belted a solo home run to right field before finishing his evening 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
The Blue Team added one run in the bottom of the third before the Gold Team knotted the contest, 3-3, with a two-run fourth inning.
