Cross Country Earns 21 Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif. - The Stanford cross country teams were well represented with the selection of the Pac-10 All-Academic teams by Pac-10 commissioner, Larry Scott. In total, 11 women and 10 men were honored by the Pac-10 for their work in the classroom as well as on the cross country course.

Kate Niehaus led the Stanford women as a first team Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Niehaus carries the highest GPA in the Pac-10 at 4.07 while majoring in human biology. Niehaus has also been a key contributor on the course, recently being named All-West Region in helping the Cardinal to a third place finish and a bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Second team All-Academic selections for the Stanford women included redshirt sophomore Madeline Duhon and senior Madeleine O'Meara. Duhon carries a 3.83 GPA in public policy and O'Meara has a 3.77 GPA in human biology.

Also honored for the Stanford women as honorable mention were Claire Collison Alexandra Gits, Georgia Griffin, Stephanie Marcy, Emma Miller-Bedell, Victoria Pennings, Kristin Reese and Anne St. Geme.

The men were led by a trio of first team selections including Pac-10 individual champion Chris Derrick. Derrick, an undeclared sophomore, carries a 3.81 GPA in the midst of a season where he has gone undefeated and led Stanford to a No. 1 national ranking. He is joined on the first team by Justin Reed and Miles Unterreiner. Reed carries a 3.76 GPA in African and African American studies, while Unterreiner, who has been a key contributor this season for the Cardinal, has a 3.89 GPA as an undeclared sophomore.

Second team All-Academic honorees for Stanford were Elliott Heath and Justin Marpole-Bird. Both have been huge parts of Stanford's success this season, joining Derrick for the Stanford sweep of the top three spots at the NCAA West Regional. Heath carries a 3.55 GPA in advising programs while Marpole-Bird has a 3.31 GPA in international resources.

Also being honored as honorable mention were Brendan Gregg, Kevin Havel, Benjamin Johnson, Jacob Riley and J.T. Sullivan.
