Seniors Play Solid Home Match in Loss to No. 15 USC
Nov. 21, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. – The five Oregon State seniors played a solid final match in legendary Gill Coliseum, leading all five main statistical categories, but the Beavers fell in three to No. 15 USC (21-25, 19-25, 13-25) on Saturday evening.
“We built this program on their back, and they had a great run here with many great victories,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “Those are great athletes, and now we just need to focus on continuing to getting the program better. Certainly they have all improved, and it is just a matter that we make sure our freshmen realize that’s what awaits them and need to get better.”
Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) posted a 10 kill match, also leading the team defensively in the backcourt with eight digs. Senior Camilla Ah-Hoy (Laie, Hawai’i) racked up 26 assists, adding six digs and a block.
Leading the team at the net, senior Lexie Rathgeber (White Rock, British Columbia) had three blocks and added seven kills, while senior Bree Knitter (Fallbrook, Calif.) had a pair of service aces, a pair of blocks and five kills. Senior Brittney Belshe (Roseburg, Ore.) earned a dig and an assist.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first set, exchanging five lead changes with seven tied scores. With the score tied 19 all, USC took the lead with Oregon State hanging on but coming up just short with the Women of Troy taking the early 1-0 lead.
Also providing solid help was junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) with 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks.
USC’s Jessica Gysin and Audrey Eichler led the offense with 13 kills each, while libero Alli Hillgren had 13 digs.
Oregon State is now 12-16, 3-13 Pac-10, while USC improves to 19-9, 8-8 Pac-10.
