Miller Nets First Maui Win
Nov. 22, 2009
LAHAINA, Hawaii - The games have yet to start at the 26th annual EA Sports Maui Invitational, but Arizona head coach Sean Miller already was part of a winning team on the Valley Isle.
Miller and his playing partner Jaxson Stinger, 13, of Kihei, Hawaii, won the EA Sports Maui Invitational free throw shooting contest Sunday during the pre-tournament press conference at the Maui Westin hotel.
Miller and Stinger sank all four of their free throw attempts to defeat the seven other teams in the field. The Arizona duo was the only one in the field to successfully make all four of their attempts.
'Jaxson was a great shooter,' said Miller. 'We don't win without him.'
Each of the tournament's eight head coaches were paired with local youth in this competition. Each player shot two free throws apiece.
The win netted a $250 charitable contribution to Stinger's school, St. Anthony Junior/Senior High School in Wailuku, Hawaii.
Perhaps there was a bit of southwestern karma working in favor of the Wildcats, as Jaxson's parents, Chris and Sherrie, originally moved to the island from Gilbert, Ariz.
Miller and his charges open play at the EA Sports Maui Invitational tomorrow against Wisconsin at 7 p.m. HST. The game will be seen on ESPN2.
